At the crossroads of Europe, Hungary offers a wonderful fusion of old world and modern in cities like Budapest. Split in half by the wide Danube River, the capital city boasts grand old boulevards, Art Nouveau buildings and Turkish baths on one side of the river and communist-era gritty warehouses transformed into funky new bars and chic coffee houses on the other. Beyond Budapest, the Central European country, which shares borders with Austria, Serbia and the Ukraine, features everything from a lush wine-growing region on the shores of Lake Balaton in the southwest, which is also a summer vacation hot spot, to culture-rich towns like Eger, northeast of Budapest, known for its Bull’s Blood wine. In between you’ll find a swath known as the Great Plain, that is home to scenic national parks and wide-open spaces.
