There’s more to Japan than Tokyo, although the capital city is more than captivating. After exploring for a few days, however, venture out into the country, where you’ll find a different world awaits. Head to the Japan Alps and Hokkaido for excellent hiking followed by a long song in an onsen (hot spring) or down south, where the coral reefs of Okinawa dazzle. And then there is the food and culture. In Kyoto you can go zen at the Kinkakuju temple, experience the majesty of a geisha dance and indulge in a sushi feast. And wherever you travel in this elegant mannered nation you can expect polite locals, plenty of tradition and an experience that is bound to surprise and delight.
