An early morning trek through the misty forest in search of mountain gorillas is an unrivaled experience. Observing a primate family on the slopes of a volcanic mountain chain, often just yards from where you stand, will move even the most seasoned animal enthusiast. Parc National des Volcans in Rwanda is the least demanding and most scenic region in which to access the gorillas. In Uganda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers the chance to get close to these striking animals, some of the rarest on this planet. Superb white water rafting can also be found near the town of Jinja, which rests at the source of the Nile and is rapidly becoming an adventure sport destination. Restricting the number of permits and allowing only choice tour operators to work in both countries assures the highest level of conservation and protection of the parks and gorillas as possible.
